34ab4270a5 xfce: startup script. 
Historically, I had a .xinitrc file that I used to launch all of the
windowing environment stuff that I wanted.  It was a complex and
confusing shell script, and after 20 years, it was full of outdated
cruft that tried to track what distributions now generally do for
you.

So, instead, I've taken over the stuff that truly is personal to me
and put it into this xfce autostart script.

a258401ad0 vim: why wouldn't it just :set term=$TERM by default? 
I'm not sure *why* vim didn't work in xterm when I upgraded to Debian
trixie, but it definitely had screen redraw issues of all sorts until
I did a …

   :set term=xterm

… it seems that if there is a $TERM environment variable coming in,
that vim should use it, no?

YA reason why I primarily use Emacs. 😆

1e5a700ae0 Xdefaults: xterm: I can't believe UTF-8 ever worked right this way! 
It's pretty clear that if I want UTF-8 to appear correctly in xterm,
this has to be set to 1.  I also read it should be first before the
other stuff, but not sure it matters.

ffe9b5d845 Xdefaults: xterm: switch to white-on-black for a while 
Not sure I like this, but on my new setup and the new monitors, the
black-on-white setup seemed far too intense.  I am not bothered by my
usual Emacs 'linen', so I wonder if some white-ish color like that on
xterms would be better, but using white-on-black for now while I
figure it out.

c7186c1fbb Display in the mode-line that Javascript is enabled, to warn user. 
This is accomplished by having a global variable have access to the mode_line
update function, and having that global invoked upon change.  I made some
attempt to do this by using:

    global_update_mode_line_for_javascript =
       function () {  watch_pref("javascript.enabled", obj.do_update);};

However, I couldn't figure out where to call that so that it always worked at
the right moment.  This solution is probably simpler in the end.
